The language e-learning site Preply questioned more than 1,500 people across the country to determine what city would earn the crankiest crown. Surveyors asked participants to rate cities based on a series of behaviors that most would consider rude, such as having your eyes glued to your phone, being noisy in a shared space, and refusing to let other drivers merge into traffic.

Philadelphia came in at No. 1, followed by Memphis, Tenn., New York, Las Vegas, and Boston.

Boston also had the second rudest locals in the country, only behind Philadelphia. Charlotte, NC, had the rudest non-locals, according to the survey.

Boston's ranking took a hit after respondents said people there are the worst in the nation for slowing down for pedestrians and acknowledging strangers.

The nicest city in the US was Austin, Texas, with San Diego, Calif., Fort Worth, Texas, Nashville, and Indianapolis rounding out the top five.
